The beautiful, little laid-back town (with amazing wine)

Towards the end of last year, our Cape Town team planned a site inspection trip to Montagu. Not just to experience off-the beaten track areas of the country, meet owners and managers of loved and new properties in Breede River and Elgin Valley, but also to fill up with spirit and inspiration as a team, share ideas and grow together for travel starting post COVID – working jointly from our offices in Pretoria and Cape Town for our international clients.

Together with Paarl Rock Tours we started our trip from Cape Town, visiting highlights such as Wine Estate Leipzig, Mo and Rose, Fraai Uitzicht, Mimosa Lodge and many more. Everywhere, despite the personal situation and the challenging learning curve thrown unexpectedly through COVID, we encountered heartily hospitality, positivity and optimism.

The past months have also shown strong solidarity in public communities and a lot of fighting spirit, which is bristled with touch-ups, renovations, new ideas and individual marketing concepts for a better than ever prepared start of the travel season.

This positive attitude and hands on mentality is exactly what we love about South Africa!

Montagu is a small, laid-back, traditional little town characterized by their restored Cape Dutch villas, which are surrounded by beautiful gardens and brightly coloured flowers in season. Tourists can explore surrounding nature reserves for hiking, a small shopping street, various restaurants and cafes as well as a weekly Saturday morning market where local farmers sell their homemade specialties, arts and crafts and mingle together with travellers.

We stayed at the Country Hotel, the hub of Montagu, which offers traditional country charm combined with modern facilities to make a stay authentic and diverse.

The Breede River & Elgin Valley has developed in the first few years from a former insider tip to a popular region with various, diverse attractions for travellers! We South Africans love to spend time in the idyll of the Breede River mountainous landscape with elongated vineyards, spread out international popular wineries, offered gourmet cuisine, hot springs and hiking opportunities. During this trip we have definitely reset our focus by re-adding secret gems and scenery guest houses to our portfolio and look forward to market as addition to the more well-known Cape Winelands around Stellenbosch, Paarl & Franschhoek.

After an excursion in a vintage Cadillac limousine 1956 model with hotel owner PJ-Basson, a relaxed boat cruise including picnic along the Breede River from Viljoensdrift, various delicious wine and gin tastings at Van Loveren and an ambitious tour through South Hill with houseboat accommodation, we returned to Cape Town with fresh and new ideas and impressions which will inspire families, honeymooners, adventurers, active people and gourmets! :)

Happy World Gin Day!🍹 World Gin Day is a global celebration of all things gin, on the second Saturday in June every year! The idea is simple: get people together all around the world with a legitimate excuse to drink some gin, whether it’s in a cocktail, G&T or neat (yes, some people do enjoy to drink gin neat😉). Our Mirjam and Kerstin recently spent time at Owls Rest Olive and Lavender farm. Located on Route 62 between Robertson and Ashton and nestled in the foothills of the Langeberg mountains in the Klaasvoogds River valley, lies this beautiful lavender and olive farm. Visitors also get the opportunity to experience a working farm where Lavender, Rosemary and Rose Geranium are harvested by hand and then steam distilled to extract the beautiful essential oils and floral water from these crops. This island is steeped in culture and history and accessible from any safari region in Tanzania, within a matter of hours you can be relaxing on one of Zanzibar’s white sand beaches with a cocktail in hand.🍹 Zanzibar epitomises the Indian Ocean ideal. Although to the human eye, these stripes seem the same, these unique stripes help other zebras tell them apart in the wild! The reason zebras even have stripes in the first place is for thermoregulation. After making a kill, wild dogs consume their prey as rapidly as possible before it is potentially stolen by other bigger predators, such as lions and hyenas. Unlike other types of dogs, their lower teeth are curved and blade-like. This special dental adaptation allows them to quickly tear apart and shred the carcass. Our Krupa recently visited Mankwe Tented Retreat tucked away in a grove of mopane trees and mysterious woodlands, this safari lodge sanctuary offers its visitors an unbeatable location close to both land and water-based safari activities. Greetings from Botswana. 👋 Our Krupa joined a game drive across the Moremi National Park, ideally located in the central and eastern region of the Okavango Delta. Moremi is home to the Moremi Tongue and Chief’s Island, featuring one of the most varied ecosystems in Africa. She witnessed the raw, untouched beauty of the open bush, widely acknowledged as the predator capital of the world. The region promises up-close views of unique wildlife and flourishing vegetation and is the only area in Botswana where the Big Five can be found. Happy #WorldPenguinDay! Today, marks World Penguin Day as it coincides with the Adelie penguin's yearly migration cycle. We are celebrating these flightless birds and all of the traits that make them unique (and pretty darn cute, too 😉). Here are a few facts about the African penguin that you might not have known: 1. African penguin's have pink glands above their eyelids to which they can transfer blood to help cool down in the hot summer months. The pinker a penguin's brow glands become, the hotter it is. 2. The African penguin's black and white coloring is a sort of counter-shading camouflage that also allows them to easily coordinate movement underwater. 3. African penguin's were once known as jackass penguins because they produce a donkey-like braying sound. Happy #FunFactMonday! Did you know the Jozani Forest is the largest area of indigenous forest on Zanzibar Island? The area is famously home to populations of Zanzibar red colobus monkey (an endangered species found only in Zanzibar) and our Mirjam and Kerstin were lucky to enjoy an amazing sighting of this species followed by the impressive mangrove forest. How did you spend your Thursday? Our Chrisna, Ryan and Phumi welcomed more than 400 MSC Cruises guests to what is renowned as South Africa's third-largest city, Durban! It goes to show what the power of teamwork and organizational skills can achieve! Happy #FunFactMonday! Did you know a significant part of Cape Town's history is the King's Blockhouse located at the foot of Devil's Peak? The King's Blockhouse was built in 1796 by the British as a defensive and lookout position and it allows a complete view of False Bay and the Castle. The Blockhouse is on the Contour Path which continues in both directions towards Kirstenbosch and towards Table Mountain. Our Marika was invited to the reopening function of Okapuka Safari Lodge in Namibia! Following recent renovations, the lodge has partnered with the Gondwana Collection Namibia to manage its operations. It's #amazingafricaactivitytipday and as "Travel Experts" we know there are certain moments in life that are hard to describe and watching a pod of dolphins power through the deep blue water beneath a kayak, just centimetres from your awaiting fingertips, is one of them. 😉 Our Ryan ventured out into the open sea and paddle along the coastline with Waterfront Kayak – conveniently located at the V&A Waterfront. While dolphins are a bonus, they are not the sole reason to grab an oar and head out into the deep and cool waters, the unique view of Table Mountain and Lions Head is entirely different from a land-based view. Being out on the water and at sea level gives one a special sense of awe and is a wonderful opportunity to snap some unusual pics. Did you know the rocky headland of Cape Agulhas is the place where two oceans – the Indian and Atlantic – meet? 🤝 Early Portuguese seafarers rounding the most southern tip of Africa called it Capo du Agulhas, which means Cape of Needles (referring to the jagged rocks of the coastline). It is estimated that almost 200 ships have sunk off the shore of Cape Agulhas in the past 200 years. Most notably, the Japanese ship Meisho Maru’s wreckage is still visible just offshore. At 1 000 metres above sea level, this is the world’s highest commercial abseil, making for an exhilarating experience. As you are lowered into the vortex, the vast blue ocean stretches out before you, and Camps Bay, Lion’s Head and The Twelve Apostles form a panorama of splendour. The views, and the memories, of dangling 3,200 feet above the beautiful city of Cape Town are not to be missed. Happy #FunFactMonday! Our Ryan's recent journey to Robben Island began from the moment she stepped foot into the Nelson Mandela Gateway situated in the Clock Tower precinct, at the V&A Waterfront. This Gateway isn’t just another ticket office or loading dock but a museum itself – one housing exhibitions tracing local political history and is much more than meets the eye from the outside. Robben Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many know it as the place where South Africa’s first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, spent 18 years of his 27 years in prison along with many others who fought for South Africa’s freedom. But the island is rich in history that spans further than any history books have ever told. Bourke's Luck Potholes is a magnificent natural attraction located along the Panorama Route, and marks the beginning of the Blyde River Canyon, the greenest canyon in the world, and has been formed by years and years of swirling whirlpools eroding holes into the bedrock of the Treur River. The potholes were named after Tom Burke, a gold digger who staked a claim nearby. The reason why Ngwenya Glass is so special is that only recycled glass is used to make their unique products – mainly old drink bottles. Each and every piece is totally handmade and mouth blown. But have you ever met or seen a zebra with spots instead of stripes? Well, neither have we! 😉 Born in Kenya's Mara Reserve, this baby zebra has a unique polka dot appearance. He was 'spotted' in 2019 by a group of photographers, and was named Tira, the surname of the guide who found him! We’ve all heard of the term “sustainable tourism,” but just how much do we understand about the more recent concept of regenerative tourism? When you think of the words “regenerate” and “regenerative,” concepts of renewal and restoration tend to come to mind, and this is just what regenerative tourism encourages – for visitors, rather than just maintaining an area, activity or community, instead actively seeking for ways in which to revitalise the areas and communities impacted by tourism. Here are a few simple ideas on how to look out for regenerative tourism opportunities: 🌍When you contribute to a local economy, you enable the community to exist, thrive, and give back to their community. Stop and explore rather than just aiming for quick and easy. 🌍Next time you head out the door while visiting a new area, take a bag with you to pick up litter as you explore. It might seem menial, but every bit of litter collected contributes to the regeneration of the environment. 🌍Is the country or the destination you’re visiting running any social projects? Cheers to the first week of 2023!🍹🥂 Here is Tharo from @timeandtideafrica , making his favourite cocktail: Pimm's O'Clock (That literally implies lazy, happy days sitting in the sun with nothing to do and no need to worry about time) to welcome guests to the enchanting Lower Zambezi. You’ll need: Ice, to fill the jug 200ml Pimm’s No 1 600ml Carbonated Lemonade 1 sprig mint leaves 1 small cucumber, sliced 1 medium orange, sliced ½ cup of strawberries, hulled and halved To serve: + Gather the ingredients + Fill a glass jug with ice + Mix the Pimm’s with lemonade in the jug. For a single serving, go with one part of Pimm’s per three parts of lemonade + Lightly crush the mint in your hand to release the scent and oils. Add it to the Pimm’s along with the cucumber slices, orange slices and strawberry quarters + Stir with a long-handled spoon and serve in tall glasses with ice F.Y.I this cocktail is best enjoyed watching elephants lumber past whilst hippos snort loudly in the river below. 😉🐘 #myamazingafrica #lowerzambezinationalpark #timeandtide #discoverafrica
