Blog-Through Route 62 Part 6 - CERES

Apples, Apricots, Cherries, Pears, Peaches, Plums, Grapes and even onions and potatoes... Ceres is known for growing some of the best tasting South African fresh produce, and you simply have to stop and enjoy some flavourful tastings on a fruit tour or perhaps a fruit juice tasting.  Ceres produces one of South Africa's most trusted fruit juice brands, called "Ceres Fruit Juice".

You can choose from two nicknames for this beautiful town of the Route 62, some call it the "Eden of the Cape" (for obvious reasons) and the other name it is fondly known as is "Little Switzerland", as the surrounding mountains are often covered in snow in the winter months, and very pretty to see.

There are plenty of activities to do, other than fruit tours and juice tasting. Beautiful hiking, mountain biking and horse and pony trails are available to choose from, but if you fancy a little bit of adrenalin for a change, then give the Ceres Zip slide Tours a visit. You will get eagle-eye views over beautiful valleys of Ceres.
Once you have finished burning all those calories, it is time to reward yourself with some much needed Ceres sustenance. They say to always try the local cuisine, and "Babs's Jem" offers exactly that, traditional dishes using the local produce, in a very homely down to earth setting, that you don't find on every corner. But make sure you have space in your back to take home one or two of their home made jam preserves or chutneys.

There is another way to get to Ceres, you can do a 4 hour return trip from Tulbagh to Ceres on the "Ceres Rail Company", or if you perhaps are not doing the Route 62 drive, they also do full day rail trips from Cape town To Ceres and return. Something a little different!

Ceres is definitely the sweetest tasting stop along  the Route 62, it is a well respected well known  town of South Africa, and a lovely road-trip treat to definitely visit! Next stop on the Route 62 is Worcester...
