The famous Rovos Rail, an unique experience, which should be on your bucket list.

When I think back to the ride, the gentle rocking motion, the rhythmic click-clacking of the tracks and flash of diverse scenery seen through open windows from the comfort of my private cabin or the observation car come to my mind. There is something impossibly romantic about traveling by this luxury 'steam' train across Southern Africa. And when I say across Southern Africa, I literally mean it: The Rovos Rail runs various routes, for example between Pretoria and Cape Town or Pretoria to Victoria Falls. The rides vary from 3 days to up to 3 weeks, where you will experience a time travel back to the graceful 20s and 30s.

Travel in style and comfort in the footsteps of famous Africa explorers such as Livingstone, Stanley and Selous, and experience an adventurous, truly epic ride into the heart of Africa! Believe me, it is truly amazing!

The luxurious family-run Rovos Rail really taps into this romantic nostalgia and puts you back into the glamorous 20s and 30s in british style. Enjoy luxurious en-suite cabins with an old-timey feel yet with modern amenities, delicious wine-paired four-course meals in a glamorous dining car and day-stops at interesting places along the way (as comfortable as the train is, sometimes it’s good to just stretch your legs a bit).

And as if the unique style and the entire nostalgic atmosphere were not enough, the Rovos Rail offers fantastic quality food, that simply tastes amazing!

Every meal includes four courses paired with excellent local wine for lunch and dinner. Imagine delightful dishes such as asparagus ravioli, seared ostrich, perfectly-grilled hake, mouth-watering lamb and succulent scallops. For dessert, you can expect a varied cheese plate followed by items such as bright Pavlova and gooey chocolate fondant.

If that doesn’t sound amazingly delicious! And on top of that, there is a dress code for dinner: shirt and tie for men and smart dress and heels for women. On those kind of trips fashion can mainly consists of khaki colored cloths, it can be really nice to see passengers make an effort and get all suited up. Travel in style ;)

A nice side effect on the trip is also that you are basically forced to do a kind of “digital detox”. Phones are frowned upon anywhere outside of your cabin and staff have every right to politely ask you to stop checking your Insta feed or facebook at lunch and dinner (there is no good service anyway on the road through the beautiful nature and desert).

Using your phone to take pictures is of course fine, but as refreshingly found, the lack of digital distraction at dinner times was most welcomed.

At the back of the train, you find the well-stocked bar and observation car with an inside and outside section. Sipping on a Gin & Tonic or a good glass of wine as the wind whipped your hair and the sun gently set in the beautiful nature – wherever you are at the moment – is an absolute highlight. Guests tend to gather here pre-meal and it’s a lovely way to meet and mingle with your fellow passengers.
