HERMANUS – IN SEARCH OF THE BIGGEST MAMMAL IN THE WORLD

By Lili
Hermanus is rich in breath-taking scenery because it is directly located where the mountains and the sea meet. Furthermore, Hermanus has been recognized by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) as one of the 12 best Whale Watching destinations in the world. During July and December, the magnificent Southern Right Whales visit Walker Bay to breed and rear their young. Cliff paths have been specially built along the coast and offer tourists great views and the ability to watch the whales close up.
If you happen to be in Hermanus during whale season, there is one character you are bound to meet: The famous Whale Crier. He blows a code on a kelp horn to indicate where whales were last seen to point visitors in the right direction for the best views of the whales. Two other ways to enjoy whale watching besides from land are either by boat or from the air via a scenic flight.

During our vacation in South Africa, we stopped in Hermanus for two days and we decided to observe the whales by boat. There are dozens of providers down in the port and they all keep what they promise: A two-hour boat trip with friendly staff and amazing views of the big animals. After seeing those deep-sea giants you will definitely want to come back!

Besides whale watching, Hermanus offers a variety of activities, from wine tasting, horse riding, art and craft markets, speciality shops, restaurants, pottery studios, fishing, bird watching, mountain biking and nature reserves.
