VICTORIA FALLS - THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS “MOSI-OA-TUNYA”

By Mo
If for a day or a mere hour, the falls are eagerly waiting to impress. An ambience of fresh nature, unfiltered beauty and art with every shower across the pathways is as beautiful as nothing you’ve ever seen.

Just within 100km of Zambia, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, also known as the four corners, lies the Victoria Falls, formed by the famous Zambezi river. Travellers can choose to either visit the falls from Zambia or Zimbabwe side.

The water from Victoria Falls dives into a narrow gorge running parallel to the face of the falls, with the spray going high into the air, causing permanent rain, rainbows and the famous "smoke" which is visible from a distance, so, much of the time when you are viewing the falls, you are actually facing them. Close to the edge of the cliff, spray shoots upward like inverted rain from the large mass of falling water. The showers prompt you to let your guard loose and slip over to the younger side of you. To augment your experience, locals are quite friendly and welcoming, ready to assist where necessary. Visitors to the park can take a scenic flight over the falls for an aerial view.
Magnificent Rainbow

The rainbow at Victoria Falls is magnificent throughout the day all year long. During a full moon, the light of the moon produces what is known as a moonbow or Lunar rainbow. It is best seen between April and July, when there’s high water. Lunar rainbows occur when the moon’s light is reflected and refracted off water droplets in the air. They are created by moonlight, instead of sunlight.

Best Time to visit

It is best to visit The Falls during the rainy season, which is between September and March. The water pressure is quite high and you’re likely to have a ‘wet’ experience as the water sprays the pathways.

Great Activities

To get the best out of your stay, try canoeing, white water rafting, sunset cruises, bungee-jumping, gorge-swing, cable slide, abseiling, canopy tour, scenic helicopter flights and many others.
