Blog-Through Route 62 Part 13 - Barrydale

Barrydale definitely has personality! One of the highlights of the Route 62
in South Africa, not only for its beautiful surroundings, but for its entertainment and vibe, it has the most restaurants out of all the towns in the Karoo (apparently 20 in total!).
Seen in our feature image above, is Diesel & Creme (found at the Karoo Moon Motel), which is a vintage style dinner, full of character, and well worth a visit for a fun Instagram pic (or three).
If you fancy oldskool rock'n'roll Saloon vibes, then pop into the Karoo Saloon, taking you down memory lane with some classic hits from the good old day.

An absolute "Must Stop" in Barrydale, is Ronnies Sex Shop, which is not actually a sex shop at all, but a pub owned by Ronnie which has an interesting story behind it (and Ronnie will be the first to tell you about it when you visit). He originally bought the building to open a fruit and farm stall, and painted the wall, "Ronnies Shop". His friends decided to add the work "sex" as a prank. Soon to follow was the decision to rather open a pub, and keep the name, which was the start of his success.
Everyone passing buy pops in for a drink, and some leave with one piece less of underwear!! (to add to their visitor's collection hanging from the ceiling).

Barrydale is also very well known for its fruit production, not just its quirky outlets, and the dramatic difference in landscapes that bridge 10km's each side of Barrydale. One one side you have the beauty of the fertile Tradouw valley,
and on the other side, a drier feel from the semi-arid Klein Karoo. Autumn and Spring really come alive with beautiful colours, the autumn aloes and the happy wild flowers in spring. It is very picturesque

Leaving Barrydale, you head out towards Oudtshoorn, but before that we will visit Ladismith
and Calitzdorp along the
